· A Scary Story started off as a project for my high school English folio back in 1997, but was shelved in favour of another story as I couldn’t decide how best to finish it. · In 1998, I started again and finished it off as an 8 page short story. It appeared to be popular amongst some of my friends and so a sequel short story was written, which in turn was also quite popular. · In 1999, I finally decided to call it a draw with the sequels, tying nearly all the loose ends up in a 6th and final instalment. · In 2000, still unable to leave the characters alone, I took an already existing idea and merged it with some of the storylines still open from A Scary Story. This spin off came to be known as Genocide. · The story quickly expanded and by the time that I was writing the second part, it had grown to a much larger scale than I had first envisioned. · In 2002, after the completion of the third part, I decided that enough was enough and put the series to bed until such time that I felt that I could do it justice. · In 2003, I returned completely to the series of A Scary Story short stories and started to re-draft them so that there was more continuity between the parts. What started as a 6 part story became a 5 part story and it was given a better structure which allowed for the larger story to be painted. · In 2005, the final installment of Genocide was completed in its first draft. · In 2006, both A Scary Story and Genocide were published and made available to a wider audience. · A Scary Short was written to celebrate 10 years since the original draft of A Scary Story. Now, in 2008, A Scary Story, Genocide & A Scary Short have been published together in one omnibus edition. |
