Screams began to sound out across the ward. The doctor turned and started to run out of the room, calling out for someone to call the police. It was an emergency. One of the soldiers looked to Brian questioningly, but Brian only shook his head. ‘Let him go. By the time police get here, we’ll be on our way out. If anyone else should come back up this corridor, shoot to kill.’ Further shots began to ring out in the ward as the soldiers continued to execute the infected patients. Brian’s wandering eyes caught the look of the young girl again. He saw the tears running down her cheeks, the fear in her eyes and he hated himself for what was about to happen. He was still looking into her eyes, when the bullet from one of his soldier’s guns caught her in the side of the head. He’d been in the organisation for many years and was a soldier before that, but he never, ever thought that he would see the day that he would order the execution of civilians, never mind children. He forced himself to think of the rest of the mission that he had been charged with completing. Seconds later, all of the patients were lying dead in their sick beds. His orders were still not complete however. ‘Stage two boys,’ he called out. Reaching down to his belt, he pulled a two-way radio off of its clip. He raised it to his mouth. ‘Alpha team to base,’ he called into it. The reply came back almost straight away. ‘This is base. Go ahead Alpha team.’ |
